Hoop Dancing with Vollis Simpson...

Four different versions, four different dances.

Everything you see is on the digital negative. No layering. Some color enhancement and cropping but that's about it. Battery powered Christmas lights make the hoops. Exposure times between 3 and 10 minutes.

And thank you to the very nice security guard who let me shoot without permission from the museum. Sweet, smart man.

Images from the time of the Coronavirus

Been a little behind on getting recent images up on my website, with my pending prostate surgery pre-op stuff, my recent employment and money challenges due to the Coronavirus, and I'm missing the living crap out of my wife too, but that's no excuse really. I just haven't made the time to upload until now.

So on this Easter Sunday, here are some images from the past few weeks. And as always, prints and images rights are for sale.

"The Hinckley Shoe Tree"

Driving toward Great Basin National Park on a lonely two lane road a month ago, I came across this dead tree full of shoes. This one tree is not really that close to the small town of Hinckley. Just sitting there, dead, in the middle of nowhere Utah, littered with footwear.

I've searched the internet and found a lot of speculation based on little or no evidence about this particular tree and shoe trees in general. But I think I know a little bit about human behavior and perhaps even less about what bored teenagers do, but I'll give it a go with my own piece of fiction.

A trio of high school kids late on a Friday night are driving around, drinking beer and smoking dope away from their parents in Hinckley, Utah. They are having a pretty good time, bored out of their minds, fucking around, laughing at nothing, but then Guy #1 has to pee and Guy #2 pulls over near this solitary dead tree. While Guy #1 and Guy #3 tap their kidneys, Guy #2 has a stoned idea. He looks in the bed of his pickup, sees his little sister's discarded sneakers, smiles to himself, ties the laces together, and then chucks them up the tree. The three of them laugh, drain their Coors Lights, finished smoking that last joint, then they head back to town. Next week, while driving around Hell's Half Acre, smoking dope and killing another six pack, a second pair of shoes goes up that tree, this time Guy #3 brought with him his own worn-out pair of Keds. Over time, it just became a thing that teenagers did while cruising the flats west of Hinckley.

That's my guess, but the reality is no one knows for sure or they ain't telling.

And I'm just making this shit up.

Personally, seeing this dead old tree festooned with footwear on a cold winter afternoon in February gave me a slight case of the heebie-geebies. A bit of real-life post-apocalyptic Mad Max in the middle of America's Great Basin.

Heck, I've probably just watched too much damn television is all.

All 8 1/2" x 11" A/P archival pigment prints by Stu Jenks for $25, shipping, handling and taxes included...

In this time of making photos on iPhones and Macbook Pros and only looking on screens, I forget I'm a old-school guy. I make a 8 1/2 x 11 work print on archival paper of EVERY image I make. EVERY one. It's the only way, for me, to accurately check for color shift, density, composition, etc. I really like my iPad screen but it's no way to make a good print.

And I have hundreds, if not thousands, of work prints artist proofs at my studio.

If you see an image of mine on The StuBlog or on my old website or on the Fezziwig Press Store or in any of my books, there's a beautiful small print in a box somewhere, perhaps with your name on it. And since I'm organized, I can find it.

Many of you can't afford my larger prints. I understand. I don't have an extra 50 or 100 lying around either. But I do have an extra $20 for stuff I really like.

So if you see an image of mine on any of my sites or in any of my books and you want it, it's yours for $25, shipping, handling and tax included. (I believe in paying taxes, sales and otherwise.)

Just email me at my facebook page or through the StuBlog or at [email protected], and tell me what print you would like or just pull the jpeg and send that to me.

I was just watching the Tarhells lose today in basketball, working on images at my computer when I thought, 'I bet people don't realize I have boxes of work prints here.'

Graphic Pen Images From The Novel

Been working on a backlog of images that may be chapter headers for the novel I'm writing. Images from Memphis, Pacifica, San Francisco, Picacho and Barstow.

I have been on the road a lot this year, haven't I? From North Carolina, Virginia, California, and parts inbetween.

It's good to be stationary for a while, working at my desk, with cool wet night air drifting in from outside, and the smell of lavender on my hands from a living plant I purchased today.
