Initially, when I started working on this piece, I was thinking specifically of those who had survived cancer, like myself and others. But that idea has since broadened and changed as I finished oiling and polishing this piece.
To The Survivors now is for all of us in the world, who have survived this last year of living with COVID. And to those who have gotten sick with COVID and are surviving. And to those who have had loved ones die from COVID and are surviving that loss.
It's March 30th, 2021, when I typed this. We appear to be having the beginning of a 4th surge. Over 550,000 people have died of COVID in the United States as of today. 2,790,000 worldwide.
We have lost so much. But we are surviving and hopefully will be fully thriving again. But who knows when that will be.
Silver lining for me: I see my wife a lot as we both work upstairs, she in one room and I in the other. We touch often, kiss often, talk often. It's nice.
But I can’t help but think of all the other people in the world in this time of plague. I've had two friends die of COVID, a good number more who have gotten sick, but are now doing reasonably OK. Reasonably.
And most of us are still here. Most.
You're here. I'm here.
That ain't nothing.
