I saw Rev. Barber preach social justice and income equality for us poor and low wealth folk a couple of New Year’s Eve ago.
I’ve only been around true holy men a couple times in my life. He is one. A man, yes, but a holy man truly.
That night, I wept in his presence, listening to his words. He is the Martin Luther King Jr. of our time. One of the leaders of The Poor People’s Campaign, Rev. Barber is making a difference; in large ways, fighting against voter suppression, health care inequality and a living wage for all, and in small ways, by touching my heart that night and the hearts of all who hear him preach. The stoutness of this piece reflects the girth and weight of his spiritual teachings as well as that of the man.
It's entitled #2 because I made two of these pieces at the time: one, to give to him and his church in Goldsboro, North Carolina, which I deliver to them last fall, and another, as a museum piece to be shown to the world.
Then I thought just a few weeks ago, "Rev. Barber needs his own real live walking stick. Something strong that he can lean on, to help with that fused back of his. I need to make a #3." I finished it last week, made from native North Carolina Mountain Laurel wood. After COVID wanes a bit more, I guess I'll be driving the truck down to Goldsboro again.
If you can't tell, I really love the man.
