There is a little piece I didn't even know existed, (even though I do remember being interviewed. Geez. I'm getting dementia too), about Tucson artists trying to make a living in this time of The Great Recession. You can find the article at Digital Journal.
It's an OK article, and Kim quoted me accurately, but it does make it sound like we artists are not that affected by the Recession. We are. It was nice that Kim put in my quote about how the Internet helped me greatly back in the late 1990's (It did.), but I'm going to catch hell, I suppose, for this quote, that ended the article.
"You know, a lot of artists won't admit it, but many of them don't live off of their art alone and have day jobs to pay the bills," Jenks said. "There's an invisible income that's not talked about."
Sorry but it's true. Right now, I'm living off savings and a large financial gift. I may have to go back to running substance abuse groups if and when the money runs out. But I'm hopeful, that the images, books, and CDs will continue to sell, and I'll be able to concentrate myself full-time, to making a bit of magic and beauty for the world. If not, I'll press on, be a counselor, do my artwork at night and on weekends, and be forever kind to those cashiers at Basha's, who really have a hard f-ing job.
